About Darine

Darine Hamze movie star in the middle east

Darine Hamze is a Lebanese movie star born in Lebanon and raised in a private boarding school (ISC- Sabis) in London, UK.  An MA (Art & Media Practice) graduate from London’s University Of Westminster UK, and a BA graduate in Drama School (acting/ directing) from the Lebanese University of Arts, Darine is one of the rare exceptions of the Middle East that combines beauty, talent as well as high  qualified education in her working field and cinema domain.

Hamze’s career in film began in 2008 starring as (Julliet) in an Iranian acclaimed feature film “Book of Law” (co-starring legendary Iranian Star Parviz Parastui) which won film awards in Iran and Hong Kong, then through Europe’s 2011 controversial French-Lebanese film “Beirut Hotel” co-starring French actor Charles Berling as the mesmerizing (Zoha) which opened in Dubai, Locarno and Cannes Film Festivals.

Hamze made many big hit local Lebanese blockbusters such as the sequel “Yalla Aabelkon” and “Yalla Aabelkon Shabeb”, “Betroit” and many other Lebanese movies, as well as Syrian and Egyptian television series, though she gives most of the credit to the co-production of the European and Iranian cinema, she starred in, as her real hands on film achievements which ranged in character roles using different languages such as: Arabic, Egyptian, Syrian, Persian, Hebrew and French. And she first came to the attention of the American audiences with her Guardian praised performance of (Loubna) in the German-Lebanese production film “Halal Love (and sex)” which screened in Rotterdam, Sundance film festival and The Hamptons 2016, as well as screened for the nominations at the Golden Globes HFPA, LA.

Darine Hamze is mostly known for taking on diverse, high risk and “politically” challenging roles which other actresses from the region normally avoid, known as her generation’s most forceful talented professional, and the most daring star in the Middle East for taking on such challenging roles for the region with taboo subjects (liberal). Her latest Lebanese film “NUTS” directed by French director Henri Barges, which opened in Dubai Film Festival 2016, also stormed up a wave of controversial criticism in Lebanese media 2017 for shedding the light on the harsh gangster lifestyle of post war militias in Beirut. Darine Hamze has stated repeatedly that she looks constantly for roles that might challenge her physically and mentally to help wake up society’s humanity in accepting the other’s point of view, as much as possible and available to her, in order to bring together and unite religions and cultures through art and human emotion.

Darine Hamze has a big hand in the humanitarian activities and events of charity in Lebanon as well, and has been voicing the calls for rights of empowerment for women and working with NGOs to aid in finding solutions for a non-violence and peace Middle East.
